Heading North Again

Even though we are about 4 and a half months into the trip Sarah and I have reached what we feel is the halfway point, we have turned around and are coming home. We ended up taking our PADI education one step further and got certified as Advanced Open Water Divers... really it was just a few specialty dives where we learned how to deal with diving at night, diving to over 100 feet, diving wrecks and how to navigate. More than anything we did it to extend our time in Roatan and to get more time underwater (as of now we have spent 8 hours and 47 minutes breathing underwater and have reached depths of 115 feet). Unfortunately reality set in and we realized that once again we had to leave all of our new friends behind and plan for the future. We´ve nailed down our route, bought plane tickets and have been moving north for two days now. I don´t know what happened during our month and a half in the Caribbean but the Dirk and Sarah traveling entity is a much different creature. My spanish has improved dramatically and Sarah has found a peace with being in unfamiliar places. We are heading to San Cristóbal de Las Casas tommorow and I am looking forward to approaching a new city with our newfound traveling talents. I am also looking forward to shopping. For months now we have been denying ourselves all the things we´d like to buy because our backpacks are heavy enough already. Now that we are heading north again we can pick up those excellent Mexican hammocks, great Guatemalan rum and all sorts of goodies we´ve had our eyes on. Traveling has been very good to us and we´ve had great fun but now that we are heading north again I´ve found something that I haven´t felt strongly recently; a real excitement for the future. Get ready yáll... we´re coming home!
